Hi,
I’m Julian Gaylor, owner of PerFit Health and Wellness. I
started PerFit because I have a passion for changing people’s
lives for the better. Participating in sport and staying active was a
major part of my childhood but it was not until my late teens that I
realized this was something I wanted to share with people such as you.
In my final year of high school I sustained an injury that was almost
like a blessing in disguise. I was part of our schools rowing squad as
part of the 1st’s crew. I was training nearly every day of
the week for over 6 months. I had no doubt that this was the fittest
I’d ever be in my whole life. One training session
approximately 2 months before the Head of the Lake (The one race we
train all year for) I badly injured my back. I had ruptured 2 discs in
my lower back which put me out of action for a long time. I
couldn’t place any pressure on my back which resulted in very
little physical activity. When I was rowing I could eat like a horse
and burnt it all off and unfortunately I kept that same appetite after
my injury. Because of this, in the space of a few months I went from a
75kg fit and lean athlete to an overweight 85kg average Joe! This was
no doubt one of the lowlights of my life. Looking back at pictures I
still shake my head…
The change came when I started my rehabilitation work on my back and
tried to regain some fitness. I started reading magazines and searching
for information on the internet. The more I learned, the more
interested I became in how the body works. I also slowly started to see
changes in my own body. I could run further, I was getting stronger,
the centimeters were coming off my waist, clothes fit better. I was
getting complements from others and seeing these results made me feel
so good about myself and it was at this point that I decided I wanted
to help others feel this way too.
Instead of my planned university degree in Clinical Psychology, I
enrolled in a Human Movement: Exercise Science degree and never looked
back. I learned even more about the body, nutrition and the right type
of exercise/rehabilitation to suit each individual. The degree saw me
study in New York in my final year which once again opened my eyes to
even more exercise and fitness methods. I graduated from my course with
distinction and continue to learn as much as possible and now aim to
share my knowledge and expertise with those who will allow me to help.
I find it very satisfying being able to help individuals improve their
quality of life. There are a lot of fads, gimmicks and dangerous pieces
of misinformation out there so I want to help guide people through the
steps they need to take to improve their quality of life.
